The fragrance

Tonka Kumaru is inspired by Amazonian kumaru, with the idea of a warm, dense and addictive material. This is not an overly sweet or gourmand tonka, but something deeper, between softness and character.

The perfume opens on an immediate warmth, lightly spiced and almondy, which feels comforting from the start. Then the tonka takes centre stage, with facets at once vanilla-like, slightly smoky and almost tobacco-like, finely crafted.

Over time, the fragrance gains depth through woods and resins, which add staying power and give it structure without weighing it down. The tonka stays at the centre, rounder and softer, with a warm, addictive sillage.

The brand

Atelier Materi is a French perfume house founded in 2019 by Véronique Le Bihan, who comes from Brittany. These roots show in the brand’s identity, shaped by raw, mineral landscapes and by an approach to perfume centred on raw materials. Each fragrance is built around one main ingredient, worked to bring out its different facets rather than diluted in a complex structure. The compositions remain legible, with a limited number of materials arranged to support this central axis. The house’s world also draws on references to architecture, seeking clean lines, structure and balance. This carries through to the design of the objects, notably a blue-tinted glass bottle and a hand-shaped concrete cap, both the result of craft work. Finally, Atelier Materi favours closely supervised production, relying on known partners and artisanal know-how, with manufacturing mostly carried out in Europe.
