Acne Studios

by Suzy Le Helley

A clean, modern freshness, somewhere between minimalism and softness. Acne Studios offers a very modern, minimalist take on perfume, built on a contrast between clean freshness and cocooning softness. The idea is to capture the feeling of freshly washed skin, almost cool at first, which gradually turns softer and more comforting.

Who it's for, when to wear it

A unisex fragrance, fresh and powdery. Wear it every day, at the office and on relaxed days out. Powerful sillage: it projects generously and lingers in the air. Top Notes: aldehydes, mandarin, bergamot. Heart: peach, orange blossom, violet, rose. Base: musk, Iso E Super, incense, sandalwood. Composed by Suzy Le Helley.

How to wear it

Fresh notes fade faster than the rest, so be generous on the neck, wrists and collar, and keep a top-up for later in the day. It layers well with a woody or musky scent to extend its longevity.

The fragrance

Acne Studios opens on a very clear, slightly soapy freshness, with something almost metallic and clean, typical of a very contemporary style. Then the fragrance moves towards a softer, powdery texture, with discreet flowers and clean nuances that recall fresh fabric or clean skin.

Over time, the whole wraps the skin more closely, with musks and woods that add staying power while keeping that minimalist feel. The fragrance stays very linear, with an elegant, modern impression of cleanliness.

This is a very current fragrance that plays on simplicity, texture and an almost 'design' aesthetic, more than on a complex development.

The brand

Les Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle was born in 2000 from a simple, radical conviction. Frédéric Malle, grandson of the founder of Parfums Christian Dior, a former evaluator at Givaudan, trained in art history and photography, started from an observation: the world's greatest perfumers work in the shadows, constrained by marketing briefs, limited budgets and imposed deadlines. Nobody knows their names. He decided to turn that logic on its head. His model is not a perfume house. It is a publishing house, modelled on the literary world. Frédéric Malle chooses his authors, gives them complete carte blanche, no brief, no time constraints, and signs each bottle with the name of its creator. Dominique Ropion, Jean-Claude Ellena, Maurice Roucel, Olivia Giacobetti, Pierre Bourdon: some of the most respected noses in the industry, who for the first time could compose without compromise and publicly own their work. Portrait of a Lady, Carnal Flower and Musc Ravageur have become absolute benchmarks of contemporary perfumery. The bottle follows the same philosophy: neutral, pared back, minimalist, designed so that nothing distracts from the fragrance and its author. No muse, no advertising campaign. The house's reputation was built by word of mouth and by the strength of the juices themselves. A house that changed how an entire industry sees its own craft.
