Rolling in love

by Pascal Gaurin

Soft, creamy skin, like a quiet addiction. Rolling in love is built around a very particular feeling: a fragrance that becomes almost a second skin. The idea is not to create something complex, but to capture a single emotion, intimate and almost obsessive, like falling in love.

Who it's for, when to wear it

A unisex fragrance, floral and musky. Wear it every day and on a date. Powerful sillage: expect it to be noticed from a distance. Top notes: almond milk, ambrette seeds. Heart: iris, freesia. Base: musk, tonka bean, tuberose. Composed by Pascal Gaurin.

How to wear it

Two sprays on the neck and wrists are enough; on a scarf or collar, the flowers stay clearer for longer. Avoid rubbing your wrists after applying, as it flattens the opening.

The fragrance

Rolling in love opens on a very soft almond milk accord, almost cosy, that brings instant warmth. Then iris takes centre stage, powdery and elegant, structuring the fragrance without weighing it down.

Over time, the musks settle in and smooth the whole, giving that ‘clean yet sensual skin’ effect. The fragrance becomes more blended, more intimate, like something that stays very close to the skin.

It is a very distinctive fragrance, almost monochrome, playing on texture and feel rather than on any real evolution.

The brand

Kilian Paris is a perfume house founded in 2007 by Kilian Hennessy, an eighth-generation direct descendant of Richard Hennessy, founder of the cognac house of the same name, and grandson of the patriarch who oversaw the creation of LVMH. A heritage he chose to honour in his own way, by taking a radically personal direction. It all began with a final-year dissertation at Celsa on the semantics of scent, then training alongside the greatest noses, Jacques Cavallier and Thierry Wasser, before years spent at Dior and Armani. The decision to create his own house came from a visit to the Baccarat museum: faced with a century of perfumery condensed into bottles that were objects in their own right, Kilian realised that something had been lost along the way. He handed in his resignation the next day. His founding conviction fits into one sentence: 'True luxury should be eternal.' Every Kilian Paris bottle has been refillable from day one, in 2007, long before sustainability became a selling point. The collections are organised around dualities of sin and innocence, light and darkness, love and the forbidden, all across four olfactory families: Fresh Citrus, Narcotic Flowers, Cellar Woods and Smoke Trails. Angels' share pays tribute to the vapours of the Cognac cellars of his childhood. Love Don’t Be Shy – Extreme has become a modern classic of sensual vanilla. Kilian Paris perfumes all carry a story and fully live up to their motto: Don't be shy.
