Mood for Oud

by Dominique Ropion - Jean-Louis Sieuzac

A multifaceted oud, shifting and elusive. Mood for Oud revolves around a rather unusual idea: recreating an oud that does not really exist, but that you sense through several facets. The fragrance feels ever-changing, like a material that evolves depending on what you pick up.

The fragrance

Mood for Oud opens on an aromatic freshness of bergamot and cardamom, clean and slightly spicy. It makes for a fairly bright start, almost unexpected for a fragrance built around oud.

Coriander then brings a drier, spicier transition that adds contour and begins to lay down a woodier texture.

Over time, it grows deeper and warmer, as patchouli, guaiac wood and amber create a woody, slightly smoky feel that wraps the skin. The result stays quite smooth, with an 'imagined' oud that is more elegant than raw.

This fragrance never shows its oud head-on, but suggests it through different textures, from freshness to spice and wood.

The brand

Miles Wambaugh is a Franco-American artist born in Paris in 1965 to a Parisian mother and a Bostonian father, a musician and writer. He grew up in a household where art was a second language, before settling in the Baie de Somme, where he lives by the rhythm of nature, birdwatching and hunting. His perfume house was born of a conviction, 'art is man added to nature', and of a decisive meeting. Guided by Pierre Dinand, the greatest bottle designer in world perfumery and the man behind Opium, Dune and Amarige, he crossed paths with Dominique Ropion and Jean-Louis Sieuzac, two legendary perfumers at IFF. Ropion, the perfumer behind Portrait of a Lady for Frédéric Malle. Sieuzac, who composed Opium, Fahrenheit and Dune. A rare duo, working for a painter. The collection comprises five perfumes, each matched to a painting by Miles Wambaugh: Coup d’Etat, Sure Shot, Mood for Oud, Son of a Gun and Hot Shot. Names that hit hard in both languages, oriental and direct at once. The natural raw materials come exclusively from Laboratoire Monique Rémy, the world reference for natural essences. Each box contains an original drawing, signed and numbered by the artist, making every bottle a collector's piece. Bottle, painting and perfume resonate together, like a single work expressed in three dimensions.
