The fragrance

Black Phantom suggests something deep and comforting, like a blend of coffee, rum and dark chocolate. This is not a light or sugary gourmand, but a rich, almost thick material with real character.

The fragrance opens on immediate warmth, with a rum and coffee accord that feels dark and slightly bitter. Then it turns more gourmand, with chocolate and caramel adding roundness without ever taking away that depth.

Over time, the whole becomes more melting and comforting, with woods and sweet notes smoothing the composition. The fragrance stays dense and warm, with a very pronounced, almost ‘dessert liqueur’ feel.

This is a dark, powerful gourmand that plays on intensity, richness and an almost addictive sensation.

The brand

Kilian Paris is a perfume house founded in 2007 by Kilian Hennessy, an eighth-generation direct descendant of Richard Hennessy, founder of the cognac house of the same name, and grandson of the patriarch who oversaw the creation of LVMH. A heritage he chose to honour in his own way, by taking a radically personal direction. It all began with a final-year dissertation at Celsa on the semantics of scent, then training alongside the greatest noses, Jacques Cavallier and Thierry Wasser, before years spent at Dior and Armani. The decision to create his own house came from a visit to the Baccarat museum: faced with a century of perfumery condensed into bottles that were objects in their own right, Kilian realised that something had been lost along the way. He handed in his resignation the next day. His founding conviction fits into one sentence: 'True luxury should be eternal.' Every Kilian Paris bottle has been refillable from day one, in 2007, long before sustainability became a selling point.
