Perfumes that get compliments: 7 niche fragrances that work

A bottle of Kryptonite Absolu by Khalil T., the fragrance that gets the most compliments at the Sayhar counter

The perfume that gets compliments isn't necessarily the most expensive or the rarest. It's the one with a sillage that lifts off the skin, an idea you can name in a single word (caramel, milk, coconut, sandalwood) and the right dose. At the Sayhar counter on rue de Marignan, I hear 'I want a perfume people notice' every week. Here are the seven I hand over first when that happens, chosen from what our customers buy again most often and what they ask for after smelling it on someone else. The three to remember straight away: Kryptonite Absolu, Blanche Bête and Sunset Hour.

Why some perfumes get compliments and others don't

A compliment is someone smelling your fragrance without going looking for it, and wanting to say so. Three conditions come up every time.

A sillage that lifts off the skin

A fragrance that stays glued to your wrist will only ever be smelled by you. The ones that prompt a 'what are you wearing?' have a base that projects: vanilla, sandalwood, musks, ambergris, tonka bean. Every Sayhar product page states the sillage; six of the seven perfumes below are rated strong.

An idea you can name

The fragrances people compliment are easy to read: caramel, warm milk, peach, creamy sandalwood. When the person opposite can put a word to it, they say it. A very complex fragrance intrigues, but it rarely earns compliments.

The right dose

The compliment comes when someone smells you as they lean in, not from the far end of the train carriage. Two sprays of a strong fragrance do more than five: beyond that, people stop complimenting you and start opening the window.

Our pick: 7 niche perfumes that get compliments

The notes listed are those on the Sayhar product pages. The sillage is the one we give on each page. Prices are correct as of 28 September 2026.

1. Kryptonite Absolu – Khalil T.: the caramel-sandalwood our customers keep coming back for

Kryptonite Absolu by Khalil T. perfume bottle, a caramel and sandalwood perfumeKhalil T. · Extrait de parfum€150 for 50 mlView the product →
  • Notes: toffee caramel at the top; white sandalwood at the heart; praline almonds in the base.
  • Family: woody, gourmand. Sillage: strong. The product page promises more than ten hours on skin.
  • The highlight: the white sandalwood, which makes the caramel creamy and powdery rather than sticky.
  • Who / when: evenings, dates, special occasions, autumn and winter. For anyone who wants to be asked what they're wearing.
  • My take: this is the fragrance in the boutique that gets us the most 'what are you wearing?'. Plenty of people come in for it after smelling it on someone close to them. Two sprays, no more.

2. Blanche Bête – Liquides Imaginaires: the musky milk you can smell from across the room

Blanche Bête by Liquides Imaginaires perfume bottle, a musky milk perfumeLiquides Imaginaires€170 for 50 ml · €265 for 100 mlView the product →
  • Notes: ambrette seed and a milk accord at the top; jasmine, tuberose petals and incense at the heart; tonka bean, cocoa and musky vanilla in the base.
  • Family: musky, floral. Sillage: strong. Composed by Louise Turner.
  • The highlight: the clean-skin effect. It doesn't smell of 'perfume', it smells of soft, warm skin, and that is exactly what people compliment.
  • Who / when: daytime and evening alike, cosy days in, dates.
  • My take: the milky fragrance our customers ask for most at the counter, and the one that most often comes back to me as 'someone asked me what I was wearing'. Soft at the opening, very present an hour later.

3. Bianco Latte – Giardini di Toscana: sweet skin for €140

Bianco Latte by Giardini di Toscana perfume bottle, a milky caramel perfumeGiardini di Toscana€140 for 100 mlView the product →
  • Notes: caramel at the top; honey and coumarin at the heart; vanilla and white musk in the base.
  • Family: sweet, gourmand, milky, musky. Sillage: strong. Composed by Silvia Martinelli.
  • The balancing element: the white musk, which brings the caramel back towards the skin. It's sweet warm milk, not a pastry.
  • Who / when: everyday, cosy days in, dates. The best sillage-to-price ratio on the list.
  • My take: simple and formidable. The gourmand I suggest when someone tells me 'I want to smell good, not smell like cake'. You notice it from several metres away: the product page says so, and the counter confirms it.

4. Sunset Hour – Goldfield & Banks: the sunny fruity scent that makes people smile

Sunset Hour by Goldfield & Banks perfume bottle, a sunny fruity perfumeGoldfield & Banks€180 for 100 mlView the product →
  • Notes: peach, mandarin, pear and raspberry at the top; jasmine, coconut, ginger, mango and pink pepper at the heart; sandalwood, benzoin, cashmeran and vanilla in the base.
  • Family: woody, fruity, gourmand. Sillage: pronounced. Composed by Honorine Blanc.
  • The highlight: coconut and mango over a sandalwood-vanilla base. It smells of holidays, and people want to tell you so.
  • Who / when: daytime, casual, parties. The only 'pronounced' one on the list: present around you without filling the room.
  • My take: the one on the list that draws the happiest compliments, the 'that smells so good, what is it?' kind. An Australian house that many people discover with us.

5. Crème de santal – Phenom: creamy sandalwood, a close-up compliment

Crème de santal by Phenom perfume bottle, a milky sandalwood perfumePhenom€220 for 80 mlView the product →
  • Notes: rum, ambrette seed and saffron at the top; a warm milk accord, lily of the valley and jasmine at the heart; sandalwood, white musk and bourbon vanilla in the base.
  • Family: woody, musky, milky. Sillage: strong. Composed by Chris Maurice.
  • The highlight: the warm milk and rum, which keep the sandalwood from turning dry. A velvety texture that sits very close to the skin.
  • Who / when: everyday, cosy days in, the office. For anyone who doesn't like sweet but wants something soft.
  • My take: here the compliment doesn't come from across the room, it comes with a kiss on the cheek. The one I recommend to anyone who finds Kryptonite Absolu too gourmand and Blanche Bête too floral.

6. Excursion – Bey: the almond-marshmallow that smells clean

Excursion by Bey perfume bottle, an almond and marshmallow perfumeBey · Sayhar exclusive€180 for 100 mlView the product →
  • Notes: almond, neroli and bergamot at the top; marshmallow, orange blossom and Tolu balsam at the heart; white musk, tonka bean, vanilla and heliotrope in the base.
  • Family: gourmand, powdery, floral, musky. Sillage: strong. Composed by Chris Maurice.
  • The highlight: the neroli and bergamot, which give the opening a fresh-air feel before the marshmallow and musk settle in.
  • Who / when: every day, the office, parties, and even sport: the product page lists it for sporting occasions.
  • My take: the niche version of 'you smell nice'. No complicated story: it smells clean and soft, and that's what people notice in a lift.

7. Krypto Night – Khalil T.: the fresh scent that lasts all evening

Krypto Night by Khalil T. perfume bottle, an evening perfumeKhalil T.€215 for 100 mlView the product →
  • Notes: mandarin, pear and ginger at the top; orange blossom and rose at the heart; ambergris and sandalwood in the base.
  • Family: fresh, woody, floral. Sillage: strong.
  • The highlight: the contrast. A bright, almost cheerful opening that tips into a cosy amber base: it isn't the same scent at 7pm as it is at midnight.
  • Who / when: evenings, parties, dates. For anyone who wants compliments without wearing something sweet. The 9 ml is out of stock as I write.
  • My take: alongside Kryptonite Absolu, the Khalil T. our customers ask for most. If you wear a classic fresh scent and nobody ever notices it, this is the one I'll have you smell.

How to wear perfume so people notice it, without overdoing it

  • Two sprays, neck and wrists, on clean, moisturised skin. Six of these seven fragrances are strong: put on five sprays and you'll no longer smell the base, and neither will anyone else.
  • No heavily scented shower gel or body cream underneath. The compliment goes to the fragrance, not the mix.
  • Don't top up every two hours. Your nose gets used to it; other people's don't.
  • Judge it after an hour, not after a minute. The opening gives you the idea; the base tells you whether people will notice.

Try before you buy

The best way to find out whether a fragrance gets noticed on you is to wear it for a day and listen to what people say. At the Sayhar boutique, 27 rue de Marignan, Paris 8th (Champs-Élysées, open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 8pm and Sunday from 12pm to 8pm), you can try this whole selection on skin. The 9 ml sizes from Khalil T. at €45 let you live with a fragrance for a few weeks before committing to the full bottle. If you're far from Paris, the Scent Matchmaker suggests three perfumes in five questions, and every order ships with free samples. To browse by family, our musky and woody collections bring together everything in stock.

FAQ

Which perfume gets the most compliments?

At the Sayhar counter, the fragrance people most often ask us about, “What are you wearing?”, is Kryptonite Absolu by Khalil T., a caramel-sandalwood scent classified as a powerful “sillage”. Right behind it are the milky, musky scents: “Blanche Bête” by Liquides Imaginaires and “Bianco Latte” by Giardini di Toscana. What matters is a base note that projects and a clear concept, not the price.

Does a perfume that gets compliments have to be sweet?

No. Sweet and milky scents get the most compliments because they’re easy to name, but a creamy sandalwood scent like Crème de santal, a sunny fruity scent like Sunset Hour, or a fresh amber scent like Krypto Night also elicit compliments. The difference lies in the sillage and clarity, not in the sweetness.

How many sprays does it take for a perfume to get noticed?

Apply two sprays, to the neck and wrists, on clean, moisturized skin. With a fragrance classified as strong, this is enough to be noticed up close without overwhelming a room. If you apply more than three sprays, you’ll lose the base notes and end up being a nuisance instead of pleasing others.

Which niche perfume should you choose for a date?

A warm, easy-to-read fragrance, not over-applied. Kryptonite Absolu for an unapologetic gourmand, Blanche Bête for a clean-skin effect, Krypto Night for a fresh scent that lasts until midnight. On our product pages, all three are listed for romantic occasions.

How can I tell if a perfume suits me before I buy it?

Wear it for a day on your skin, not on a test strip, and see how it grows on you after an hour. At our boutique on Rue de Marignan, you can smell the entire collection. Online, the Scent Matchmaker recommends three fragrances based on five questions, with free samples included with every order.
