Patchouli-Oud

by Nicolas Bonneville
A deep and dark patchouli, enhanced by a dense and velvety oud. Patchouli Oud features a dark and dense patchouli, blended with an oud that reinforces it without making it harsh. This is not a fragrance that pits two ingredients against each other, but rather a deep, almost compact blend, where everything seems fused from the outset.

The Fragrance

Patchouli-Oud opens with a very present patchouli, earthy, slightly damp, with an almost raw edge that gives it a lot of character. Then the oud arrives in support, drier, darker, structuring the perfume and giving it a woodier, more serious dimension. Over time, the whole becomes smoother, more blended, like a thick material warming on the skin. The earthy side softens, giving way to something warmer, almost velvety, while maintaining true depth. It's a dark, dense, and highly textured fragrance that plays on the sensation of material rather than on evolution or contrasts.

The brand

Affinessence is a French perfumery house founded in 2015 by Sophie Bruneau, who takes a fresh approach to classic perfume construction. Drawing on over twenty-five years of experience in olfactory analysis and nourished by an artistic background in dance, music, and sculpture, Sophie Bruneau approaches perfume as a material to be worked and molded, rather than simply following a pre-established formula. Her approach is based on a simple yet fundamental idea: to move beyond the traditional olfactory pyramid. While perfumery organizes its creations into three stages: top, heart, and base notes, Affinessence chooses to isolate each level to make it the very heart of the perfume. The first collection, Notes de Fond (Base Notes), explores deep and persistent materials, such as woods, resins, musks, and spices. Each creation is built around two main ingredients that interact and structure the entire composition. The Notes de Cœur (Heart Notes) collection focuses on more floral, gourmand, or spicy materials, treated with the same intensity and longevity as notes that are usually lighter. Finally, the Notes de Tête (Top Notes) collection applies this approach to fresher and brighter accords, designed to maintain a real presence on the skin.
